The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll: My Generation & Plugging InWith his wild clothes, quiet words and shattering guitar sounds, Jimi Hendrix personified the paradoxes of rock in the late ‘60s. Hendrix preached peace, love and understanding in the midst of a war that was tearing America apart – but he would, like so many others, be devoured by personal demons in his pursuit of a new utopia of artistic and individual freedom. My Generation recounts the giddy rise and harrowing fall of rock’s ‘60s counterculture. When the era ended, it was with a grisly bang.
Bob Dylan nearly caused a riot when he plugged in his guitar and began to play at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. To most adults – and every folk fan – rock ‘n’ roll was mindless music. Few people recognized then that Dylan’s defiant gesture signaled a cultural revolution. Plugging In recounts how rock reinvented itself in the mid-‘60s.

The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll: Guitar Heroes & The ‘70s: Have aNice Decade
It’s remarkable to think that if Les Paul and Leo Fender hadn’t developed the electric guitar, rock ‘n’ roll might never have been. Guitar Heroes celebrates the role this instrument has played in the history of rock, focusing on famous pioneers. The ‘70s: Have a Nice Decade recaptures the highs and lows of rock’s glamour years. With elaborate recording sessions and the showiest stage acts, rock ‘n’ roll had never been bigger – but the sheer scale of it began to distort the music’s identity as an outsider’s art form.

The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll: Punk & Up from the UndergroundThe wrath of an entire nation focused on a single rock band when Sex Pistols released “God Save the Queen” during Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. As the three living band members and manager Malcom McLaren recall in Punk, they aimed to inflame. Punk documents how punk used short and simple songs to “reclaim rock ‘n’ roll.” In the Eighties, rock had irony, flash – and more shock and sex appeal than ever. By beaming rock video clips around the world, MTV became rock’s first global network – and created a powerful new corporate medium, complete with wild imagery and calculated self-censorship. At the same time, inner-city youth were improvising a controversial medium of their own, in the form of rap. Up from the Underground shows how rock reinvented itself in the 1980s.

The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll: Britain Invades, America Fights Back & The Sounds of SoulIn January 1964, the Beatles landed in New York City – and rock ‘n’ Roll was born again. Jolted by the competition, American bands rose to the occasion, fighting back with music that was original, energetic and in tune with a decade of roller-coaster change. Britain Invades, America Fights Back tells the story of rock’s renaissance between 1964 and 1966. “Soul” is sometimes defined as the essence of the human spirit. In the popular music of the 1960s, soul meant something more tangible. It was a shout of joy, a cry of pain – and an emblem of uninhibited self-expression. The Sounds of Soul traces the rise of a new form of musical artistry.

The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll: Rock ‘n’ Roll Explodes & GoodRockin’ Tonight
It seemed like a sound from nowhere, boogie beats and bluesy vocals lighting up the late-night radio dial with songs like “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” They called it “race” music, or “rhythm and blues.” Around the world, white kids tuned in – and began to imitate what they heard. It was the seedtime of a new kind of music: What we, today, call “rock ‘n’ roll.” Rock ‘n’ Roll Explodes is a kaleidoscope of musical memories. Disc jockey Alan Freed was the first to call it “rock ‘n’ roll” – but it was Elvis Aron Presley who gave the new music sex appeal. In a matter of months during the summer and fall of 1956, the “Hillbilly Cat” transformed old-fashioned rhythm and blues into a new kind of music, breaching the boundaries between country and blues, folk and pop, black and white. Good Rockin’ Tonight recounts the glory days of rock’s first golden age.
